0The hacker, known as Sp1d3r, said he stole the sensitive data of more than 4 million US students from two major educational institutions. We are talking about a public school in Los Alamos and an online school called Edgenuity.
The cybercriminal obtained information about minor students, from kindergarten students to high school students, as well as their parents: names, addresses, medical information, login credentials, grades, disciplines, and much more.
The heads of educational institutions affected by the hack have already received a warning from the scammer that the information will become publicly available if the hacker’s demands are not met.
The cybercriminal requested 30 bitcoins (about $2 million), which must be paid by June 25, otherwise information about the students will be made public.
A similar situation occurred with the data of more than 30 million clients of the Santander Group bank from Chile, Spain and Uruguay. The hacker also demanded 30 bitcoins for the return of stolen confidential information.
According to cybersecurity experts, the identity theft is being carried out by the UNC5537 hacker group, which most likely consists of US and UK citizens aged 19 to 22 years.
